Training...

All training is free and on a one to one basis by or under the supervision of qualified Branch Instructors. The training schedule is designed to give a thorough grounding in all the basic aspects of diving both practical and theory, thus enabling you to become an enthusiastic, safe diver and "buddy". The length of time taken on training differs from person to person; everyone progresses at his/her own pace.

Initially you will be asked to complete a short swim test that will help us to assess your swimming capability. This will be followed by finning & snorkelling techniques. You should then have some idea of whether you wish to carry on and begin your training on aqualung.

Training is divided into roughly 3 sections: -
1) The lecture programme and lecture test gives you the theory behind diving practices.
2) Pool training gives you some of the practical skills required for diving.
3) Open water training - this is diving for real undertaken at first in shallow, sheltered water you will progress to a maximum of 20metres until qualified. Skills learned in the pool are further developed. You will need to complete at least 10 dives, 6 of which should be sea dives. You will then become a qualified Sport Diver.

Already have a PADI or BSAC qualification? We welcome divers with previous experience and/or qualifications. Visit the Scotsac crossover page for more information. Upon joining our Branch Diving Officer will advise you on any training or assessments required to transfer to Scotsac.

Equipment...

The club has a good selection of equipment available for you to use throughout your training. However, once into open water a small charge will be made for the hire of equipment (our equipment officer can give you details). As you progress you will be encouraged to purchase your own equipment, if you are sure that scuba diving is for you. There are plenty of club members who will be happy to advise you, but whether you buy new or second hand do try before you buy. Visit one of the Dive Shows where there are plenty of shops/manufacturers only too happy to let you try equipment before you buy.
Basic equipment that can be purchased while pool training are:
1) Mask - be sure to try on first. £20 - £40
2) Snorkel - nothing fancy. £10 - £15
3) Fins - either pool fins, £10 - £20 or open foot fins (you will need neoprene boots with the latter). £25 - £125, (boots £25).
Even if you decide that scuba is not for you these can still be used for snorkelling on holiday.

In the long run it is cheaper to purchase your own equipment, whether new or second hand. Some good bargains can be had on E bay, but take advice before you bid, and if possible examine the gear first.
